Cannabis and cannabis resin (different drugs for legal purposes) are both currently class C drugs.  They were both originally Class B.

There are currently no plans to re-classify them.

The importance of classification relates to the potential penalties for offences involving the drugs.  E.G. For simple possession the maximum penalties are:- Summary - Class A: 12 months or 5000 or both;  Class B: 3 months or 2500 or both; Class C: 3 months or 1000 or both.   On indictment - Class A: 7 years or unlimited fine or both; Class B: 5 years or unlimited fine or both; Class C: 2 years or unlimited fine or both.  For full details see Schedule 4 to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, as amended.
