do all lawyers work crazy hrs?
May 26th, 2009 at 10:23am

Hi all

Im entering the accelerated law scheme this year. I really do want to be a lawyer not sure as to what line as yet so just doing  bits of research into various seats, firms even along the lines of civil service law.

I was just wondering if law = no life as there was an article in the times a while back titles 'why lawyers are misrable /want a list' it would put anyone off being a lawyer with apparently 40% of lawyers wanting to leave the proffession.

Is all this true or jsut the odd case? I am working full time at the moment  in a job that is ok good time off and regular hrs but money not so goodand have worked in a consultancy firm which really was no life u were away in a hotel 5 days a week and worked well in 1 2am , plus the atmosphere was horrible with eeryone just trying to mess each other over.  I cannot belive that ALL laywers live like that

Any opinions please

It all depends on the type of firm you work for. Some are sane and allow normal working hours. Others demand a pound of flesh. A rough rule of thumb would be that the bigger commercial firms tend to be more demanding, everyone trying to prove they are indispensable etc. Smaller firms are usually run by those who have a life and recognise that employees deserve on too. However, like every rule of thumb there are exceptions on both sides. If you get to the point of looking for a jb you need to try to find out from other employess of the firm what it's like.

Would definitely say there are exceptions, on both sides.  In any event, within each type of firm (perhaps more so in the bigger firms) its up to you what you make of it.

You could be doing 9-5 in a small firm and have no life and hate your job.  Equally, you could regularly be doing 7am - 1am in a bigger firm and still have a more active/interesting life than other people and really enjoy your job too.

If you don't view the day as ending at 6pm when everyone gets herded home to watch the news followed by corronation street, eastenders, big brother and strictly come exploited then you can make a lot more of it.

You can do a 9-5/6 in bigger Scottish firms too, by the way.  Just depends what department you're in and how motivated and efficient you are.  But there will come times where you are required to do the odd late stint, even in those departments.
