leaving the UK

A question from a writer. Is it possible for police to discover if a UK citizen has left the country within a specified time period. Example;
Policeman: "Tell me, sir, were you in Paris last Tuesday?"
Interviewee: "No, officer. I was not."

Now, the interviewee could be lying. Can the policeman check? If so, how?
