I have been fighting to get my children back since June last year. I was badly represented at the start and as such my partner got temporary residency of them. The case is supposed to be going to a proof in April, but my lawyer will not be there, as she is going on maternity leave and she will be appointing someone in her place. I have not yet met her replacement.
This has been a disaster from the start. My partner had initially put forward a case that I would abduct the children to America as I have dual nationality. He was in possesion of all of our passports as he had locked me out of the family home with nothing. This was never investigated. He is still in the family home as it is in his name, although I have supported the family throughout our relationship of 12 years.
My 10 year old son does not want to see me as my partner has told him terrible lies about me, however my 4 year old son is of the opposite opinion and wants to be with me all the time.
My lawyer has told me that, as my elder son doesn't want to see me, I have no hope of getting my children back, regardless of whether he has been turned against me or not.
I would welcome input on this matter and I am present trying to decide whether to change lawyers.

I think you are probably getting jitters because you haven't met your solicitor's replacement.  As part of the handover (of her work to the new person) try and speakwith him/her and see if you still feel the same afterwards.

If you are worried about the cost, check that you will not be charged for any time that new person spends in getting up-to-date with the case.
